We’ve finished up our West side Northfield remodeling project. This involved raising the roof on the existing entry, removing the existing stairs to the upper floor, and installing new a new hardwood staircase. The new stairway is generously wide and comfortable to travel on. The owners selected white painted balusters with square newel posts. SMSQ Architects did the design work to figure out how to make these improvements gracefully. The rear exterior of the house looks good, with the use of a slender Marvin window on the landing.
While doing this we created a ‘secret nook’ under the stairway landing that is accessed by opening a bookcase. On a big staircase like this there is a quite a bit of room under the landing that is good, clean storage and this door makes it all accessible.
Obviously, a project like this is disruptive to life in the home. But the end result….a bright, airy entry way with a new safe, solid stairway is worth the trouble.
