Today we started work on a small addition to a home on the east side of Northfield. The work involves expanding the kitchen by about 4’ and creating a screen porch. It is a fairly compact project with all the work confined to the backyard.
Our work today involved removing the yard fence and excavating for the foundation. One never knows what will be encountered as far as soils when excavating in the older neighborhoods. We have encountered old cisterns, outhouse foundations, junk cars, and just about every other type of debris. In this instance there was a decent amount of organic soil, then nice sandy soil for the foundation to rest on….just what we want.
