Defeat of Jesse James Days

I attended the Northfield Chamber of Commerce Defeat of Jesse James Days (DJJD) hog roast last Wednesday evening.

The hog roast is an annual event and is an opportunity for the Chamber to thank local businesses and festival supporters for their help with the DJJD celebration. It is also a time for everyone to meet DJJD Queen Candidates, visit together and generally have a pleasant evening together.

Every town seems to have its own annual celebration. Northfield’s is Defeat of Jesse James Days and occurs the first weekend in September each year. I like the placement of this festival…outside the three busy summer months and after school has started. The town acknowledges that the James gang of 1876 attempted to rob our local First National Bank of Northfield, but ran into stiff armed citizen resistance.

That resistance says something about the founding families in Northfield. They clearly were a protective community ready to defend themselves and stand up for what is right. Other than using guns…..I think Northfield is still like that.
